We adore thee O Christ, and we bless you.
Because of your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

It was the third hour, when they crucified him. And the inscription of the charge against him read, "The King of the Jews". And with him they crucified two robbers, one on the right and one on the left (Mk 15:25-27).

"They know not what they do" (Lk 23:24). They nailed him to the cross in order to get rid of him, but in doing so, bonded him more firmly to the earth. They nailed him down so that he could no longer go away but remain with us forever; neither the Resurrection or the Ascension could alter this.

No one binds Jesus to sinful humanity: he remains with us, of his own accord, to the very end. And when he returns on judgement day the cross "the sign of the Son of Man, will appear in heaven" (Mt 24: 30).

"All things were created through him and for him" (Col 1:16-17), that is, for the Son whom the Father allows to be nailed to the cross of the world.
Overwhelmed by this unfathomable mystery we can only kneel in grateful adoration.

Our Father …

Holy Mother, pierce me through:
In my heart each wound renew
Of my Saviour crucified.
